Lunchtime Lecture:

Suppleness of the Horse - training a horse to be supple and flexible with the addition of lightness of the reign and leg aids.

 by Ian Stewart

Ian Stewart has an enormous background in many disciplines, influenced as a youngster by his father, an excellent horseman. Ian has been starting and training horses for 35 years and has coached in numerous disciplines with a high level of success.

He played polocrosse for 28 years which led to coaching state level and was awarded W.A and Australian Coach of the Year.

For the past 10-15 years Ian has coached riders from all different levels and backgrounds, but currently coaches mostly dressage riders from prelim to FEI level with the emphasis on suppleness, lightness and flexibility of the horse.

 DRAW for Young Horse

On Sunday 21st February, we held our second competition for the year (and it’s only February!) which was the Young Horse National Qualifier at the State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon.  We had 4 x 4 year olds, 7 x 5 year olds and 2 x 6 year olds.  The Young Horse competition immediately followed a Freestyle competition being run at the Centre which was a great idea, as there were plenty of spectators who stayed on and marvelled at these stars of the future battling it out for the beautiful rugs, very kindly donated by Horseland.

Watching these young horses was inspirational, and even the 4 year olds hardly put a foot wrong which was amazing as some of them were a little hesitant about being in the indoor arena during the warm up.  We decided to give the horses 15 minutes ‘arena orientation’ time, particularly for the 4 year olds, so that they could get used to the sights and sounds of being ridden indoors, before the competition, and judging from feedback we received from riders afterwards, it was very much appreciated.  We had a horse from Geraldton, and one from Kalgoorlie, so it’s an honour for us that people are making so much effort to attend our competitions.

A very special mention must go to Gemma Barnett who came second in the 4 year old class, this was Gemma’s first ever dressage competition, so we presented her with a SVDA cap as encouragement to keep up the good work, well done Gemma.

All riders went home with a Swan Valley Dressage Association ribbon, and our very kind sponsors at Brigadoon Produce had provided some products for a ‘lucky dip’ so that each rider chose a something nice to remember their day with us.  We also presented both hard working judges, Wendy Barker and Hannie Byrne, with an engraved Swan Valley Dressage Association wine glass as a memento.

Stockfeed West kindly gave us vouchers for the 2nd place getters, and everyone seemed happy.  Chris Hope came and shadow judged, and Heather Martin gave up her time to pencil for the afternoon.

Brigadoon Produce have offered us a fabulous sponsorship package.  If you mention that you are a Swan Valley Dressage Association member when you go in to purchase anything, they will note it.  Then, at the end of the year, they will donate a percentage of all SVDA sales back to the club for us to then use next year for the purchase of prizes, paying judges, venue hire, etc.  Please support them, to then support us.

What an exciting start to the New Year for Swan Valley Dressage Association! The inaugural WA Foal Championship took place in the indoor arena at the beautiful Brookleigh Estate. With a field of 13 foals it was great to see so many breeders represented, and this showcase of some of WA's top dressage prospects, was well received by a very enthusiastic audience.

The Assessor from Germany was Mr Gerd Küst; he has been involved with the Holsteiner Verband and ZfDP (Zuchtverband fuer deutsche Pferde) for the past 10 years, with his vast breeding and equestrian sport knowledge and very good English skills, he was a great asset. He has ridden in the past at the Oldenburger and Westphalia auctions and started breeding successfully himself about 30 years ago.

The mares and foals showed off their paces for the judge and the huge audience (yes, the grandstand was nearly full, and the atmosphere was electric).  The foals seemed to quite enjoy the challenge, and one little filly stood right in front of the judge on her own, as if to say "look at me, aren't I gorgeous?".

The first round was judged and scored on confirmation and movement and then the top 2 fillies and 2 colts were invited back, and from what the judge saw the second time, he made his final decision.

Champion: Bluefields Felicia

2nd Place: Bluefields Felice

3rd Place: Bluefields Figo

4th Place: Meadowbrook Victoria

It was a real thrill for Lys and JJ Fuchs of Bluefields Stud to take out the top three places, closely followed by Gemma Davies' lovely filly, who is a Royal Oak II daughter.  An interesting fact is that both 2nd and 3rd place foals from Bluefields Stud were born on 18th December 2009, so the planets must have been positively aligned that day!

The event was very well supported by a large audience and by generous sponsors. Each breeder was presented with a show bag donated by NRG Group who provide all sorts of lovely products to keep our horses in good shape.  The winner of the competition was presented with a beautiful sash donated by HBC who are the breeding arm of Bluefields Stud and SAS who produce the "Stallions at Stud" book and the winners to 6th place received a copy of the book.

Adding to the fun was a bonus competition for the audience who voted on their favorite foal and the winner, Robin Clemens, won a superb case of wine, very kindly donated by Lancaster Wines.

There would have been some tired foals at the end of the day, but what a great start to their competition lives; to get used to floating, the indoor arena, and performing in front of an appreciative live audience - there's nothing like starting young, is there?
