Saturday, 16th May 2009 T&D Day
On 16th May, we held a Training and Development Day at the grounds of Swan Valley Equestrian Park. The weather was perfect, a typical autumn day with a lovely crisp morning, followed by warm sunshine. Thanks to Dwight and Sue Pedlow at SVEP, the grounds were magnificent and the feedback from the riders was that the arenas were lovely to ride on. Our judges for the day were Roz Tippett and Judy Weber. Both judges spent 15 minutes or so with each rider and gave constructive feedback after (and sometimes before) each test. Some riders were lucky enough to have a short impromptu lesson with the judge and based on the smiles on the faces of the riders afterwards, everyone was happy.
Morning tea and lunch was supplied by Celeste & Kelsey Haltzhausen - absolutely delicious. It was very pleasant sitting under the verandah enjoying home made soup and rolls, chatting away.
All the committee helped with marshalling, penciling, administration and other duties, and we always welcome new members to the SVDA team as many hands make light work. Particular thanks to Sue Cartledge & her Mum who penciled for Judy Weber. Sue is new to the club and had never penciled before and she thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very useful – thanks Sue.
After lunch, Roz gave a very informative talk based on what she had seen during the morning’s tests, and riders listened intently while she spoke about using corners correctly, making tests more accurate, and “falling in love with the bounce” of the sitting trot. At the conclusion of the talk, Roz shared a dvd with us showing us her CDI Freestyle Test in Sydney. This was fantastic to watch, and inspirational to most.

Our next T & D Day is on 30th May, and the judges are Hazel Hikins and Yvonne Ong. We are introducing the new tests, which are compulsory in July, and riders will have the choice of whether to ride the new or old tests.

T & D Day, 30th May 2009
Last Saturday was yet another glorious Training & Development Day at Swan Valley Equestrian Park. The weather dial was set to ‘perfect’ and stayed like that all day. After a very successful series of T & D Days, we were over-run with entries, and unfortunately, would have been going well into the night if we had taken all of them. It’s awful to have to turn people away, but it’s really a case of the ‘early bird catching the worm’. Some members were so keen not to miss out next time, they gave us entries for the next T & D day which is on 14th June, again at SVEP.
Our esteemed judges for the day were Yvonne Ong and Hazel Hikins – thank you so much, Ladies. Yvonne judged the morning tests which were the ‘old’ or current tests, and Hazel took over after lunch to judge the ‘new’ tests which come into play in July. It was encouraging to see so many members having a go at the new tests. A big thank you goes to Barb Pickett who pencilled for Yvonne. If there was a ‘Pencilling Olympics” Barb would win gold, as she’s out there most weekends, furiously scribbling away in someone’s car for many hours at a time.

Lunch was provided again by Celeste and Kelsey Holtzhausen and riders enjoyed home made soup and freshly made toasted sandwiches. Our lunchtime talk was given by Portland Jones. It was entitled "About the Horse" and covered topics such as the evolution of the horse, his mental capabilities, how he learns and some ideas to improve training. Most of the riders attended, and we were in awe as Portland enlightened us with the results of years of research on her chosen subject. Portland and her husband Paul, run a training facility in Herne Hill. They help with horse behaviour problems, including float training, and Paul also specialises in float repairs, servicing and modifications .For more information and to contact Portland and Paul, visit: http://www.equineinsight.com.au/

DRAW for SUNDAY 14th June 2009
SUNDAY, 14th June 2009
Well, we’ve just had another SVDA Training & Development Day, and it was another glorious sunny day (if not a little chilly, first thing) at Swan Valley Equestrian Park. Isn’t it supposed to be winter with rain and storms? All the early birds gathered around a roaring fire, and then we sat on the verandah in the sunshine enjoying a day of superb dressage whilst catching up with old friends, and making new ones!
Our judge for the morning session was Chris Hope and her trusty penciller, Jonathan. Chris has judged for us at a number of T & D Days, and always has lots of positive feedback for riders.
Our judge for the afternoon session was Joanne Fowler who also gave us a very informative talk over lunch about the selection criteria for the National Squad. Joanne has been on the selection panel for the last two Olympic Games, and is on the selection panel for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, as well as WEG in Kentucky next year. It’s a real bonus having a representative from Western Australia on the panel, and we learnt that it doesn’t matter where you’re from, as long as you can meet the criteria, and are prepared to put in the work, and travel – the opportunities are there for everyone to be considered for the squad. If riders can get sponsors, it makes that goal of a gold medal more achievable, and it was interesting to note that it’s a combination of horse and rider, not just one, or the other, which is considered. We learnt about grants, training in Europe, age limits for the horses, and what a potential squad member needs to be doing to be in the running for a place in the team.
We were invited to put forward our own suggestions for the Australian Team, and Joanne was able to tell us whether we were on the right track. There were many questions from our members showing that this is a subject which our members are interested in. Wouldn’t it be wonderful one day to have a WA rider not only representing Australia, but flying the SVDA flag at the Olympic Games! Thanks to both Chris and Joanne for their time – we really appreciate it.
As usual, our fantastic organizing committee provided yet another enjoyable day of dressage in the valley, and a big thank you goes to Celeste for her delicious home-made soup and extravagant selection of bread – just right for a cold day, Christine Ingram for pencilling and providing her vehicle for the afternoon session, and JJ for his videoing skills. We also have our ‘behind the scenes’ members who are Heather Martin for all her work with the website & newsletters, and Richard Spencer for being our treasurer and provider of computer equipment at events. Unfortunately Aleta was away this time, but should be back on board for the next T & D Day. Not quite sure who is responsible for organising the weather, but it has been spot on for each event so far this year!
Talking about the next training day – it’s at Brookleigh on Saturday July 4th. This time, we’ll only be running the 2009 new tests, so if you don’t know them, you have a couple of weeks to start practicing. We will be doing the ‘B’s again. See you next time ..... Joanna Dale |

Lunchtime Demonstration:
We are very lucky to have the highly talented and very approachable Dr Victoria Hamilton and her young horse "Asadream" to perform a ridden demonstration.

Photo: VICTORIA HAMILTON & ASAACHEN
Although qualified as a veterinarian, Victoria Hamilton is now a full-time dressage coach and rider. She is a successful competitor at a State, National and International level with many different horses and is experienced coaching riders of all ages, abilities and ambitions.
Victoria’s love of dressage is contagious and is apparent in her teaching. She makes training logical, easy and fun for both horse and rider by using a variety of different exercises. These ensure the horse develops correctly physically and mentally and helps to build a harmonious and almost telepathic relationship between horse and rider.
